Response: NAACP on SB1070: another attempt to roll the clock back on civil rights protections in this country

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Gracias for this Forward Companero Beltran~ Yesterday was a great day that helped to raise consciousness among masses of people on immigrant rights and the urgent need for sane and humane immigration legislation. We need to unite with all peoples as humane beings who have care, concern and compassion for all peoples of all lands upon Mother Earth.

It is essential that we unite in solidarity with our African-American Brothers and Sisters, work side-by-side with all peoples and combat all residue of social racism in the process of our on-going liberation struggles. We must expand our consciousness beyond the old concept of civil rights, learn from past historical lessons and think in terms of humane rights in general, including the centrality of immigrant rights for Latinos, especially undocumented Mexican families.

We have proved that we can mobilize many for marches and rallies. My heart is stronger today than it was yesterday. Now we have to build up natural alliances, merge with allies and war onward towards true Peace upon Mother Earth!

Subject: NAACP on SB1070: another attempt to roll the clock back on civil rights protections in this country

National NAACP Joins Its Arizona State Conference In Outrage Over Racial Profiling Impact On Arizona's New So Called Immigration Law

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The NAACP issued the following statement today regarding SB1070; a new law in Arizona that gives local law enforcement the right to arrest anyone they suspect is in the country illegally.  Governor Jan Brewer signed SB1070 into Arizona law on Friday, April 23rd.

"The NAACP is outraged that in 2010, a sitting Governor would sign a law that empowers local law enforcement to legally use racial profiling to target entire communities.  It is a violation of the respect for human rights that is the moral standard of our nation and it threatens the safety of us all as both immigrants and citizens will be fearful of reporting crimes to police.   The law unwisely redirects the role of the Federal Immigration and Naturalization Department to local police officers diverting local resources from fighting crime to investigating undocumented people who might be in this country," stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous.  "Governor Brewer's signature on SB1070 is another attempt to roll the clock back on civil rights protections in this country."

"The passage of SB1070 is an embarrassment to the equal protection clause in the U.S. Constitution, and if we are not careful will leave a permanent stain on the United State's reputation throughout the world. As an association that has fought for more than 100 years to ensure that basic rights and freedoms would be equally extended to all, it is disheartening to see the State of Arizona enact a law that tramples on the civil rights of Hispanic persons, and one that cannot be enforced without resorting to racial and ethnic profiling.  We intend to use the full weight of our 2200 branches and units to ensure that this law is repealed and does not happen in other states across this nation," stated NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock.  "As a nation we must enact comprehensive immigration reform so people who are in this country without documentation will have a path to citizenship, and we look forward to working toward that goal with the President and Congress in the coming months."

The proposed law requires state, county, and municipal employees to ascertain the immigration status of a person if there is "reasonable suspicion" that the person is unlawfully present in the U.S. It also subjects local governments and their personnel to lawsuits by any citizen who feels that the new law is not being enforced sufficiently. The law would impose a $500 fine, among other costs, and a misdemeanor charge leading to possible deportation for individuals who could not show proof of legal presence

"The NAACP is deeply disappointed that Governor Brewer signed SB1070 into law.  This new law effectively legalizes the incendiary practice of racial profiling and will adversely affect communities of color across Arizona.  Moreover, it sets a dangerous precedent for other states to follow suit and pass similar discriminatory measures," stated NAACP Washington Bureau Director and Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy Hilary O. Shelton. "We look forward to working with other national civil rights groups, the U.S. Congress and President Obama to achieve comprehensive immigration reform so that racially and ethnically discriminatory laws like SB1070 are rendered irrelevant and useless."

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

At least 20,000 walk in Dallas immigration march

By DANNY ROBBINS Associated Press Writer © 2010 The Associated Press

DALLAS — A crowd of at least 20,000, many carrying American flags, marched through downtown Dallas on Saturday in a mostly peaceful rally for immigration reform that was occasionally tinged with bitterness on both sides.

At the head of the march was Bishop Kevin J. Farrell of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas, flanked by state Sen. Royce West and former state Rep. Domingo Garcia.

The crowd marched for about a mile from a Catholic church to Dallas City Hall, with many in attendance noting concern for a new Arizona law requiring authorities to question people about their immigration status if they're suspected of being in the country illegally. The protest was one of several similar rallies held nationwide.

Juan Hernandez, the Hispanic outreach coordinator for Sen. John McCain's unsuccessful presidential run, said Arizona was once considered by those south of the border to be a model state with particularly close ties to Mexico.

"It went beyond what most states do," said Hernandez, who attended the rally. "Now they are a state that goes beyond what the Constitution says you should do."

Retired seamstress Alicia Yeaguirre, 76, came clutching American flags and wearing a T-shirt saying "I love America" on the front in English and "Si, se puede" — "We can do it" in Spanish — on the back. The native of Mexico said she's a U.S. citizen who immigrated 56 years ago and raised five sons who graduated from college. She said she was inspired to march because of her dislike for the Arizona law. "I came here, like everybody else, looking for a better place to raise a family," Yeaguirre said. "And I did it."

Isela Sanchez, 21, listened to the speeches at City Hall while nursing her 3-week-old son from a bottle. She said she attended the rally to honor her Mexican-born parents, who came to the United States 23 years ago.

On the podium, former legislator Garcia said the large turnout at rallies across the country "sends a powerful message to Washington that we need immigration reform now."

Garcia, an attorney for the League of United Latin American Citizens, said later that his group would target companies that do business in Arizona. He said he planned to meet with Plano-based Frito-Lay next week in an effort to get the snack company to drop its sponsorship of the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz.

Organizers had estimated as many as 100,000 might attend the Dallas march. Police estimated between 20,000 and 25,000 gathered in the plaza outside City Hall. Organizers said thousands more participated in the march.

About a dozen people carried signs depicting Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer in a Nazi uniform with her arm extended in a Nazi salute. The signs also showed Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, known for his tough illegal immigration stance, wearing a white hood and holding a noose.

The word "Arizona" was printed across the bottom, with the "z" replaced by a swastika. Rally organizers were asking people to discard the signs.

About a half dozen counter-protesters stood behind a police barricade at the start of the march, with one man holding a sign that said "Shut Your Mouths and Start Headin' South." Another 100 counter-protesters waited at City Hall, chanting "Viva Arizona" at the marchers and asking them to show their identification.

John Ellis, 40, of Dallas, said he is unemployed and believes illegal immigrants will make his job search more difficult. "I have no problem with someone who wants to come here and be an American citizen," Ellis said. "But if they are here illegally, it concerns me."

Dallas police spokesman Sgt. Warren C. Mitchell said there was a large police presence, with some plainclothes officers walking in the march and others stationed with cameras high up in buildings. No arrests were made, Mitchell said.

The Houston Chronicle reported that about 7,000 marchers attended a rally in Houston, according to police estimates.

President Obama Pushes Away from the Immigration Reform Table

http://bit.ly/aYdLCI

President Obama Pushes Away from the Immigration Reform Table

President Obama on Air Force One yesterday stated that Congress may not have the appetite for immigration reform this year.  Truth be told, it has been the President who has turned his nose up to the leafy green immigration reform vegetables.  Unfortunately, what we have witnessed is merely another example of the President's "blame and do nothing" immigration reform strategy that he has employed since being elected.

When running for office candidate Obama's message was clear: he would put a stop to the immigration enforcement practices of the Bush presidency effectuating real change by ending the destruction of families in this country; he would immediately work with Congress to pass the DREAM act and other reform-centric legislation; and he would secure our borders.

Suffice it to say, he is 0 for 3.

Here are the facts: Obama's record on deportation makes George Bush look like a humanitarian.  He deports an average of 1,000 people per day that he has been in office. He is on pace to deport approximately one-half of the estimated undocumented community in the United States should he serve two terms in office, and with one-third of his first term over he has not made any meaningful attempt to work with Congress to achieve immigration reform.

In addition, his administration has been guilty of covering up the abuse of immigrant detainees, has created secret unmarked immigration detention facilities, and his administration regularly moves immigrant detainees far from their lawyers and their support networks to frustrate their defense.

Moreover, since Obama has been elected I have NEVER in my nearly 15 years of practicing immigration law seen more obstacles placed in front of business immigrants who apply for visas to come to this country.  As a result, potential foreign national investors, who create jobs, and pay taxes avoid the United States altogether, because the obstacles at times are insurmountable.

Here is the bottom line: President Obama is dangerous to immigrants, and to the cause of comprehensive immigration reform, and it is time that we start looking for his replacement in 2012.

Comment: Obama is never getting my vote again. Who cannot be better than Fuhrer Bush was? He has betrayed many who vote for him, despite his brilliance in general he is a buffoon when it comes to certain foreign policies and domestic concerns. We need to look at the next round of Elections in November and into a new Presidential term with a new candidate for the next White House run.
The whole two-party system of the Demos-Repubs is corrupt and archaic. Be an independent!
