Appreciate Brother Cort ~ Many are not sure who to support in relation to the power forces in Syria. Surely it is not all black and white. We need to look at what is in the best interests of the people, not just go by what is popular.

The whole idea of 'Left' is so outdated. We need to adopt new vocabulary and terminology to better explain connected reality today.

At the same time we cannot get so consumed by events thousands of miles that we forget what is going and what is to be done here now inside the United States. There are many form of what can be considered escapism.

We need to be aware of not becoming long-distance analysts about events far away and escape doing coherent analysis about what is going on in our own immediate situation.

We need a comprehensive humane rights agenda that can relate to helping oppressed people in general, yet not fail to address specific 'ethnic issues' peculiar to specific people.

For example, what the hell is going on with Chicanos aka Latinos who are caged in Nazi Amerika's concentration camps? Who is going hungry in our local communities? Who needs shelter from the storms of life? Remember our basic survival needs!

Nevertheless, I appreciate your contributions to this Group, suggest you get hip to Twitter and that we all become better communicators via social media online AND in our local areas.

This is a very short synopsis, since it has not been translated from Arabic as of yet. 

The regime has accused the opposition of rejoicing about the Israeli attacks  but it is a lie since they are also against all interventions including Israeli intervention.

 But how did the regime respond but attacking several cities with rockets and bombs and the bombing of the Yarmouk refugee camp for Palestinians.


Politically for such a strike, especially as it came a few days after the massacres committed by the forces of the dictatorial regime in the village of Beida and the city of Banias, which sparked outrage and condemnation great for heinous inhuman and raised the degree of build-sectarian who plays him both the system Al-Assad and some of the reactionary forces of the Syrian opposition.

The objective of these raids, which corresponds with the positions of the United States and other Western countries since the beginning of the revolution, but the desire to destroy the infrastructure and economic potential and military to Syria, to be the next order, and no matter what its nature, weak and anemic and subject. 

Because the victory of the popular revolution in Syria while continuing to Egypt and other countries is the real threat to the Zionist state

Israeli aggression in Syria is provoking a war

One of the explosions on Mt. Qasioun, north of Damascus.
Early on Sunday morning, huge explosions rocked northern Damascus.
Scientists said that the explosions measured between two and three on the Richter scale, a scale designed to measure earthquakes. Giant balls of fire rose above Mt. Qasioun, a mountain that overlooks the capital and is at the center of Syria's largest military complex. The very symbol of Assad's control over Damascus was on fire.
Immediately, Syrian officials stated that an Israeli airstrike had hit a military installation in the area. Within a short time, unnamed American officials confirmed Israel had struck Damascus, a sign that the US government likely greenlighted the attack.
This strike took place within days of another Israeli airstrike that apparently targeted a shipment of rockets en route from the Syrian military to Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.
Some analysts have said that a stockpile of rockets, made in Iran and bound for Lebanon, was the target of this second strike.
However, this analysis ignores the fact that several important military installations appear to have been the targets of this most recent strike.
The Syrian government claimed that a military research facility was struck (map). In addiion, there have been many videos of the explosions, taken from many different angles, which suggest that a much wider range of targets, across a wider area of the military installation, were struck and not simply a convoy of rockets.
An initial analysis by Stroyful's Félim McMahon suggests that the research facility itself was not hit, but rather the nearby headquarters of the 104th Brigade. Beyond this, videos suggest that huge stockpiles of weapons, likely artillery shells and ballistic/artillery rockets, were also destroyed in the airstrike.
The 104th Brigade is an elite group of Republican Guards tasked with defending one of the most sensitive areas of Assad's defense network in the capital. 
The precise locations of the targets are still being nailed down and confirmed, but some insurgent leaders are reporting that an even wider stretch of area was hit:
The 4th Armored Divion is Assad's most important unit, run by his brother, Rifaat Al Assad. If the 4th Armored Division was indeed the target of the airstrike, this is a major blow to Assad and to the regime.
The Israeli airstrike did not target stockpiles of weapons deep in storage.
These are the most important fortresses that the regime maintains, and are instrumental to Assad's ongoing defense against the rebel offensive. These artillery and rockets from this area are used to routinely target insurgent positions, and civilian neighborhoods, all across the capital, from east to west, north to south.
These stockpiles are particularly important to Assad's efforts to retake Darayya, the largest suburb of Damascus which has been at the front lines of the fight for the capital for over six months. There are unconfirmed reports that the 4th Armored Division and the 155th Brigade SCUD missile base were also hit, but even if this is not the case, the Israelis have struck at some of Assad's most important bases, just kilometers from the Presidential Palace.
The message to Assad is clear. If the regime continues to move rockets across the border to aid Hezbollah, Israel willnot only strike at the immediate threat, but will deal serious body blows to the regime, severely hampering Assad's efforts to counter Syria's insurgency.
The question remains, however, as to whether destabilizing Assad was the ultimate goal of this airstrike. At the very least, Israel has proven that it is willing to pick a side and go all in if it feels threatened.
This incident should also permanently put to rest the debate as to whether Assad's air defense is capable of standing up to external threats. Assad is completely vulnerable, and has been dealt a serious blow. As a result, Israel may have completely changed the debate about foreign intervention in a single instant, and may have catalyzed an international drive to remove Bashar al-Assad from power.

1400 GMT: Refugees
The number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon topped 450,000 in April, amid a wave of violence bordering the northern Bekaa Valley.
A UN report said 50 families were arriving each day with close to 1000 crossing into Lebanon in the last week of April. About 90% of the arrivals were women and children.
1205 GMT: Sanctions and Computer Equipment
Documents establish that large amounts of computer equipment from Dell have been sold to the Syrian government through a Dubai-based distributor despite strict trade sanctions, according to The New York Times.
The computer equipment was sold by BDL Gulf, which is based in Saudi Arabia and is an authorised distributor for Dell in the Middle East and Africa and a reseller for other computer brands, including Samsung and Acer.
BDL sold the equipment to Anas Hasoon Trading, a Damascus-based company with contracts to provide computers to the Syrian government, according to billings records and e-mail exchanges between the companies.
1125 GMT: Assad Appears
President Assad attended the unveiling of a statue to "martyrs" at Damascus University on Saturday.
"President Bashar al-Assad joined thousands of students and the families of martyred students at the unveiling of a statue to the memory of the martyrs of Syria's universities at the University of Damascus," State TV reported.
A photo showed Assad being greeted by enthusiastic students.
On Wednesday, Assad visited a Damascus electrical plant on Workers' Day. His last reported appearance before that was on 20 March.
0950 GMT: Israeli Airstrike
Israeli officials have confirmed an airstrike early Friday on a shipment of advanced missiles.
The officials said on Saturday the shipment was not of chemical arms, but of "game changing" weapons bound for the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
It is unclear if Israeli forces hit the target outside Syria or fired from Israeli airspace into Syria, for example, from the Golan Heights. The Israeli officials gave no location for the strike --- US officials earlier said that the Israelis fired from outside Syria into the country.
0648 GMT: Kurdish Clashes with Insurgents

Kurdish news sites claim that the Kurdish People's Defence Units have killed 11 insurgents and captured others in fighting close to the cities of Hasaka and Ras al-Ain.
Among the insurgents involved were members of the Islamist faction Jabhat al-Nusra.
Clashes have persisted despite an agreement between the YPG and Free Syrian Army which declared areas as "liberated". Fighting is also reported near the Kurdish city of Efrin and in Aleppo.
0538 GMT: Casualties
The Local Coordination Committees claim 139 people were confirmed dead  on Friday, including 37 in Damascus and its suburbs, 35 in the Bayada mass killing, and 22 in Aleppo Province.
The Violations Documentation Center puts the confirmed death toll at 59,262 since the conflict begin in March 2011, an increase of 149 from Thursday.
Of those killed, 46,542 were civilians, a rise of 107 from yesterday.
0530 GMT: Israeli Strike?
Two US officials have said that Israeli warplanes fired into Syria, targeting a weapon site.
The officials said US and Western intelligence agencies are reviewing classified data showing Israel most likely conducted the strike overnight on Thursday.
0520 GMT: US Intervention
At a Friday news conference, President Obama maintained a cautious line while holding out the possibility of tougher American public action against the Syrian regime: "If in fact there is the kind of systematic use of chemical weapons inside of Syria, we expect we are going to get additional further evidence and at that point we will absolutely present that to the international community."
While ruling out direct involvement by the US military, Obama said additional steps will be based on the "facts on the ground" and what is in the best interests of the American people and US national security":
I'm going to make those decision based on the best evidence and after careful consultation, because when we rush into things, when we leap before we look, then not only do we pay a price but oftentimes we see unintended consequences on the ground. So it's important that we do it right.
 
While American officials have said that a decision on the public arms supply of weapons to insurgents is weeks away, the US is already involved in a multi-lateral covert effort to provide arms and to train opposition fighters, primarily from a base in Jordan.

MEXICO CITY — For generations, Mexico has been widely seen in the United States as a Third World neighbor, a source of cheap labor, illegal immigration and drugs.
But now, Mexico's growing economic might is transforming relations between the two countries, foreshadowing a new balance of power that was hinted at in President Obama's visit to the region Thursday and Friday.

Despite growing concerns among U.S. officials that Mexico's new president, Enrique Peña Nieto, might scale back coordinated efforts to stop the flow of drugs over the border, Obama struck a deferential tone in his appearances here, in marked contrast to a visit four years ago. He said Thursday that it is "obviously up to the Mexican people to determine their security" and on Friday used his remarks to emphasize the United States' responsibilities toward Mexico.

The new U.S. approach comes at a time of robust growth for the Mexican economy, which has fueled a middle-class expansion. After Canada, Mexico is the second-biggest importer of American-made goods — buying more than Britain, Germany and France or China and Japan combined — and that fact is central to one of the key pillars of Obama's strategy for growing the beleaguered U.S. economy: exports.

"U.S. exports to Mexico grew $51 billion in the last two years, and that's more than anywhere else in the world," said Jodi Bond, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's vice president for the Americas. "Mexico is helping us with a manufacturing resurgence, and U.S. companies are growing because the Mexican middle class is growing."
Mexican pollster and political analyst Roy Campos said that while it is usually Mexico that has the heavier agenda in meetings with the United States, "this time it's different."

"It seems like Obama needs more from Mexico than the other way around," Campos said.

The United States remains enormously important to Mexico, and it still imports from its neighbor significantly more than it exports. But the trade gap is narrowing; it is now the smallest it has been since 2009, when Mexican growth was about to take off.

In his remarks Friday at the Anthropology Museum here, Obama sought to reassure Mexicans that he takes their country's economic strength and democratic progress seriously.

"Some Americans only see the Mexico depicted in sensational headlines of violence and border crossings. Some Mexicans may think America disrespects Mexico, that we seek to impose ourselves on Mexican sovereignty," Obama said to cheers. "I have come to Mexico because it is time to put old mind-sets aside. It's time to recognize new realities, including the impressive progress in today's Mexico."

Four years ago, in his first trip as president, Obama came to Mexico and said it was critical to take "urgent and coordinated action" to stem the flow of drugs. He spoke of ramping up law enforcement on the border, providing Mexico with military aircraft and equipment, and ensuring additional high-level­ cooperation with Mexican law enforcement authorities.
But after years of sporadic coordination, the relationship was already changing dramatically when Obama returned this week. Peña Nieto is seeking to limit U.S. involvement in Mexico's security problems, which include not only drugs but organized crime and kidnappings, and Obama said he had no problem with that new approach.

Rather, he put the focus on what the United States needs to do.

"We understand that the root cause of much of the violence here — and so much suffering for many Mexicans — is the demand for illegal drugs, including in the United States," Obama said. "We recognize that most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States."

U.S. officials said that they anticipate cooperation between the two countries to continue unabated, even as they adjust for the new Mexican president's expected policy changes.

Ted Piccone, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said Obama's approach does not represent a "paradigm shift" but reflects domestic politics.

"I think it's Obama being Obama — respectful and positive when visiting other countries, particularly such an important neighbor like Mexico," he said by e-mail. "Any president does better in advancing U.S. interests when he plays to both his foreign and domestic audiences. The latter, notably, includes a growing number of Mexican-Americans who vote and whose allegiances to the Democrats helped get him re-elected."

Despite a glum report about Mexico's economic outlook earlier this week, the country enjoyed growth of 3.9 percent last year. And its economy is still expected to grow 3.5 percent this year, one to 1.5 percentage points faster than the U.S. economy, and pick up speed from there.

Mexico has branched out from its reliance on the United States. When the U.S. economy suffered a terrible economic slowdown, Mexico's began to charge forward, helped by its growing relationships with Asia.
Carl Meacham, a director of the Americas program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said that, in a change from the past, Mexico and its neighbors have been largely immune to the economic head winds that have confronted the United States.

"They used to say, [if] the United States would catch a cold, the rest of the region would get the flu," he said. "Right now, it seems that when things on the economic front affect the United States, the region deals with it almost with a shrug."

"So much of the region is moving to focus on countries around the world," Meacham said. "China is one of those countries, but they're also looking at economies in the southeast of Asia — South Korea, Japan — to help buoy economic growth."

Later Friday, Obama flew to San Jose, Costa Rica, where he was to attend a bilateral meeting, visit with youth and hold a news conference with President Laura Chinchilla.

On Saturday, he will deliver another address and meet with Latin American leaders as part of the regional Central American Integration System — including leaders from Nicaragua, Belize, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

RESPONSE TO MIKE ACOSTA COMMENTS POSTED ON LARED-CYBERLATINA.NET LISTSERV 4/29/13 REGARDING ARTICLE ON SAL CASTRO

It's unfortunate that Mike did not personally know Sal Castro and understand the context within which he uttered these words. Anyone who knew Sal is aware that he never denigrated manual labor, for this is the family situation from which he drew his strength.  Certainly this is the situation from which all the Raza draws its strength in that there are probably very few second generation college graduates among us.  There is no doubt in my mind that there are many Sal Castros in city and state after city and state wherever there are Raza students - teachers dedicated to see their students succeed (and not just Chicano teachers, either).  And, succeeding does not just mean going to and graduating from college. It means being a productive human being.  Sal Castro came from a world at a time when very few Chicanos attended college.  For example, in 1969-70 there were only 50 Chicano students at UCLA, a campus at the time of some 30,000 students.  One year before Sal Castro was instrumental in organizing the largest high school student strike/walk-out in the history of America up to that date along with numerous other student leaders.  He put his career on the line and did so repeatedly before and after 1968.  His sole mission was to improve public education for the Raza and pave the way to higher education.  He was instrumental in convening the Chicano Youth Leadership Conferences and continuing its existence year after year for the purpose of forging new leadership for all the Juanitos and Juanitas who were searching for the path out of poverty and discrimination. College for Sal Castro was one path, but not the only.  If you knew Sal Castro you would appreciate the context within which he would make such a statement - like a father pissed off at his mijo who was taking the wrong path or who was slacking. Yes, he had that type of relationship with the young students that sought out his fatherly guidance and counsel. Rosalio Munoz was touched by that guidance as a student at Franklin High School in Los Angeles.  He was accepted to UCLA in 1968 and paved the way for many more Chicanos to attend and in 1970 became the first Chicano student body president. He also became a national figure when he opposed the draft for military service to Vietnam and initiated with creation of the National Chicano Moratorium Committee, which was responsible for mobilizing the largest marches of Chicanos against America's war in Vietnam at that time.  Today, approximately 25 percent of UCLA's student body is Chicano/Latino/Mexicano, however you identify, thanks to the thousands of pushy Chicano and non-Chicano teachers that make themselves available to our youth.  History tells us that an oppressed people fighting for their liberation forge their own intellectuals as an important part of their struggle.  Access to higher educational institutions is an elementary step of reform as part of that struggle.  It's not too hard to see why the oppressor class denies the oppressed such access.  The point is that Juanito and Juanita should have a choice in the matter, and Sal Castro fought his whole adult life to make sure that they would have that choice. I can't think of less inspiring words than to call young  chicano students stupid if they don't graduate from college. in other words theory x is still alive in the barrio. this theory was primarily used as a negative motivational technique in the workplace by bosses who believed employees were lazy, stupid and naturally opposed to work. But evidently a barrio version of this negative theory is hailed as an iconic technique to prod chicanos towards college. when did the inspiring shibboleth "si se puede" all of a sudden turn into "no sean mensos?" have we turned to shouting at our youngsters instead of speaking with them? Nothing used to irk juanito more in class then to hear a motivational speaker wearing a white shirt and tie tell students, "if I can graduate from college so can you." The implication of this message was that juanito was a spitting image of the speaker. But, juanito knew better, he saw that they were more like mirror images of each other; he was a tall older man, juanito was still a shorter boy, the speaker's face was a cortez-looking face, juanito's was not. However, something other than physical appearance made juanito turn away from the speaker; it was when the speaker pompously crossed the line saying to students, "you don't have to do dirty work with your hands, you too can wear a white shirt and be a successful newspaper editor like I am." What the motivator didn't know was that juanito's father worked as a mechanic and always had dirty hands. did this man think he was better than juanito's dad? maybe it was from admiring his father that juanito chose to become a mechanic. i suppose some will say that juanito was a "menso" for not graduating from college and becoming a newspaper editor. Juanito's brother went to college, and so did his sisters; but he now works getting his hands dirty in his own car repair shop and likes fixing cars for people, many of whom went to college and are still looking for jobs. Juanito is happy with who he is; he is not rich but earns enough to support his wonderful family; and someday his children may graduate from college or choose some other useful thing to do. Therefore it is unfair to use the word menso to single out  chicanos that don't graduate from college. I say this because a college degree doesn't always protect one from  being a menso too. viva la raza

Fellow-travelers of NetworkAztlan: The language was inappropriate, but the sentiment expressed by the denunciation is more than correct.  In other words, these acknowledged (by the political establishment/system) "civil rights" organizations that are chartered by the UNITED STATES government corporation, and are funded by it (including the private foundations, which are also chartered by the same government) continuously honor these personages who are appointed, anointed, and elected by the government/corporate leaders for the purpose of reaffirming the values and political authority of this system over the populace and demonstrates that they are not a threat to this system, and therefore, will continue to receive funding from the government/corporation/foundations.  It's all about continue the funding cycle and ultimately not challenging the fundamental premises of the system under which we live and struggle.  The rape and blunder of the public lands by the myriad of corporations that receive subsidies and concessions by their government is like adding salt to injury of the indigenous peoples of the Americas.  Therefore, consider the source of the language. And, to further add salt to injury for those involved in political movements for political representation, for example, electing and nominating more Latinos to position of political authority, the illusion is that they would somehow represent the Raza, but that is not the case.  They really represent their corporate paymasters and the material interests of these, and themselves and their personal political ambitions.  We have come full circle as that relates to ethnic politics from the modern-day point of origin of the Chicano movement in the 1960s to come to the realization that those who we believe we elected to public office are doing any different than the Anglo/white politicians that they replaced.  We are back where we started, but with much more wisdom after 50 years of accumulated experience.  We are back to the future - as the movie title portrays. Therefore, don't get so upset at the brother/sister who conveyed the sentiment, but get upset at the "civil rights" organizations, like National Council of La Raza, who continue to perpetuate the illusions that they represent our interests.  They DON'T.  They represent the interests of their paymasters and their job is to keep all of us in line.

Monday Morning ~ Happy Earth Day! First of all, if words matter, Network Aztlan News Group is a group, not a list, that term went our years ago. We need to be more inclusive and I have known nadaytodo for several years online and we have talked on the phone long ago. I think it is good in general to let folks post what they want. Let others speak without reserve. Know who are your friends and who are your enemies.

I am not going to attack anyone behind this, this too shall pass. More important for now is to do more research before we condemn or attack anyone. I am the News Monitor here. I support MALDEF but that does not translate into supporting all who they support. For example, Eric Holder is a patent fascist.

Let's research more before we rush to judgment.
