Companero Dr. David ~ After all this time I had hoped that your thinking about these old issues would have evolved more in order to really understand what happened to the Chicano Movement and be able to explain it truthfully with all its gory details.
There were internal contradiction that were not resolved in the old Chicano Movement and international events that demanded more than a mere nationalist perspective on what is essentially a global worldwide movement.
I could write a book about it, but other matters demand my immediate attention in these troubled times and I do not dwell on the past unless it helps enlighten the present to guide us into the future.
The way the early Chicano Movement formed in the late 60's and developed in the 70's had a lot to do with local situations as there was not and is not now a main Chicano political party to give us good local leaders with national coordination and the capacity to reach out to other revolutionaries in Latin America and the Third World.
The main lasting organization has proven to be the United Farmworkers Union.
Here in Sacramento, the Capitol of California, we had the Senior Brown Berets and a strong Jr. Brown Berets. The main internal division among us was between Chicano cultural nationalists who failed to absorb Mexicanos and the Chicanos who related to the concept of international socialism and reaching out to all peoples.
I was one of the last functional Brown Berets here and we kind of all melted back into our local barrios or were co-opted by the system.
Many of the Chicano cultural nationalists were absorbed into the college system and the state government system, lost their revolutionary fervor and thus were co-opted by the subtle designs of Amerikan fascism. Others became local drunks and druggies.
Nevertheless, when a revolutionary thrust fails it always remains the fault of the vanguard elements, the fault of the existing leadership, the fault of those in posiitons of control and influence. We can blame the U.S. Counter-Intelligence Program, but somewhere between here and death we must take responsibility for our actions.
Leadership must lead and lead vigorously with a solvent coherent strategy, systematic ideology and help provide solutions to problems as they arise in order to establish themselves as centers of leadership. You should know, remember you were the Prime Minister!
The struggles goes on with us and without us. We still need to build up a basic infrastructure capable of moving the movement forward and fielding a new vanguard cadre. Faith hearts never win decisive struggles.

| During the Chicano Civil Rights movement, much was accomplished. Yet, this movement went down in flames because a few tried to change the ideology and caused the movement to collaps. The Chicano movement was largely based on the creation of events by groups like the Brown Beret National Organization. This group was largely a nationalist organization that wanted a piece of the land. Somehow, this idea got misinterpreted that the nationalist wanted all of the land. Basically, the main theme was to fight with organization and non violence. These actions created a homefront and centered issues around education, land, justice, and reform. Somehow, a group of arm chair revolutionaries came out and tried to change the movement to pay attention to the international front. This idea only took energy away from the homefront. Also, leaders who were for understanding nationalism basics were slandered by the internationalist thus causing further division in the Chicano movement and causing people to leave the movement. The problem with international empires is that they should not try to influence civil rights movements because they end up destroying them. For example, if the Chicano movement had been given a chance to grow, great things could have occured. Their would be no violence and less drugs in the community, saving thousands of lives. Chicanos would have had a chance to hold land to build their universities, and still keep thier Chicano identity. There would be more good jobs. Hundreds of Chicanos would hold their cultural identity high and hold offices with a real sense of cooperative communications toward the intellectual advancement -- creating a real political base, and without selling out to dominate society. And their first allegence would have been to the homefront to deal with issues of survival and advancement. -David Sanchez Ph.D. | |||

THE CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS
ReplyDeleteThe recent and the present strife
Is culmination of
The racism pervading life
Of these United States, as wove
Into the national fabric--prove
Me wrong: so it was played by Rove.
The policy was utterly
Divisiveness, alas!
But there are many such as me
Who gladly will allow to pass
This white supremacy, such as
Great influence pervasive has.
Elections have been won upon
True fears exaggerated--
But there is little to be done:
The demographics, unabated,
Are changing, a new world created
Within this Union consecrated.
Perhaps the union will not last--
It takes a certain broad
Agreement, which is fading fast,
To steer away from slander, fraud,
And to abide (though process flawed)
By laws which any should applaud.
Equality of all before
The law were universal,
But now such reason men deplore,
So eager each to snatch his morsel
(Or property conveyed by parcel),
That it seems will come no reversal:
Reversal of the huger trend
As toward dictatorship,
Theocracy--though they pretend
Democracy, as try to grip
Dominant portion and equip
Themselves all others for to gyp.
Lord, each has his distaste, disdain
For persons of another sort,
Yet it ought not be outright pain
To get along if not cavort--
But mutual agreement slain
Of everyone to be a sport,
Nor victories by cheat attain,
Though words are long, makes prospect short.
