"OUTLAW," STARRING MALDEF SUPPORTER JIMMY SMITS, TO PREMIERE WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 ON NBC

Show will air regularly on Fridays (10-11 p.m.)

Jimmy Smits in OutlawLOS ANGELES, CA - Starring Emmy Award winner Jimmy Smits ("NYPD Blue," "The West Wing"), "Outlaw" is a new drama from creator and executive producer John Eisendrath, which will have a special premiere on Wednesday, September 15, and again on Friday, September 17, after which it will fall into its regular timeslot of Friday's at 10 pm on NBC.

Few jobs are guaranteed for a lifetime, and a Supreme Court appointment is a position that no one ever quits -- unless he is Cyrus Garza (Smits). Justice Garza always adhered to a strict interpretation of the law until he realized the system he believed in was flawed. Now, he's quit the bench and returned to private practice.

Utilizing his inside knowledge of the justice system, Garza and his team will travel across the country taking on today's biggest and most controversial legal cases.

"With Latinos now the nation's largest minority group and an increasingly important part of our nation's future, positive depictions of Latinos on television remain regrettably in short supply. Jimmy Smits' portrayal of a Latino former Supreme Court justice doing good as a legal advocate is therefore a welcome -- and, we hope, an enduring -- addition to the TV landscape."
- Thomas A. Saenz, MALDEF President and General Counsel

Utilizing his inside knowledge of the justice system, Garza and his team will travel across the country taking on today's biggest and most controversial legal cases.

Smits, who also co-executive produces the show, has the opportunity to portray one of the few positive leading Hispanic characters on TV today in a non-traditional setting.
