To: La Raza Cosmica ~ Compañero Jose was a beautiful man who had great love and compassion for all people. He was around a lot while I was growing up involved in Chicano Movimiento activities here in Sacramento. He had a great balance between spiritual strength and inner tenderness.



I saw him a few months ago on the K Street Mall and knew he was a little ill. (Picture Attached).



He use to just love to walk the Mall with his sketchbook and greet and talk to the gente who knew him.

Jose Ernesto Montoya 1932-2013

It pains me to write this note. Today, this evening, Sept 25, Jose Montoya passed away. I sit hear listening to his music, his words, and I flip through my memories of this old friend, this mentor, this voice of my generation. I think about all the people that he touched across this country and beyond. I remember my first contact with him in 1967 by telephone soliciting his writings for the Berkeley journal, El Grito. I met him in 1969 in Sacramento as we entered our Master's Fellowship Program together in the Mexican American Education Project at CSU Sacramento. We went on to become co-members of the Royal Chicano Air Force, an artists' collective. We shared a passion for the education of our people, indeed for all those who were outside the mainstream of America. We shared a commitment to bring art to the lives of a greater circle of people in this country. We laughed, we told stories, we talked of history and the future, we looked at life with a shared set of eyes. Jose Montoya was the man who Ada and I asked to marry us. With his power of voice and capacity to use words with purpose, he was the one who could unite us in a way no one else could. I cry tears and I laugh joyously at the memories of my life with Jose and all the people who were and are part of the RCAF. May Jose rest in peace. I look forward to seeing him again someday.
