| Mexican American Political Association September 13, 2007 Greetings! CALL TO ALL MAPISTAS FROM MAPA PRESIDENT MAPA CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION 2007 NATIONAL LATINO CONGRESO - Los Angeles Dear Mapistas: This is the first call to all members of MAPA to attend the 2007 Constitutional Convention at the site of the National Latino Congreso on October 5th-9th 2007 at the Sheraton Hotel Los Angeles Downtown, 711 South Hope Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017 (213) 488- 3500. The convention is also open to the public and all those who are interested in becoming a member of MAPA. The national board of directors has discussed this advantage of convening our constitutional convention at the site of the National Latino Congreso, comply with our (MAPA) bylaws, and participate in this historic event wherein thousands of delegates of hundreds of Latino organizations from throughout the U.S. will be present to discuss many issues of relevance to our community, participate in a presidential candidate forum (which will be televised by TELEMUNDO), and engage in discussions and debates in workshops, plenary sessions, and social events for four days. This will provide MAPA delegates the opportunity to participate in both events. Check out the Congreso website at: www.latinocongreso.org for the schedule of activities and registration. Call for hotel reservations at the number above ASAP to receive the conference rate. Mention that you are with MAPA and the National Latino Congreso. MAPA is a co-convener of the National Latino Congreso. We have assumed a responsibility to promote and build the Latino Congreso. This is our contribution to build unity amongst the many membership and advocacy organizations of our community that are concerned about the quality of life in the U.S. The MAPA convention will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at a venue in the hotel during the course of the Congreso. The main function of the constitutional convention is to elect state/national officers and consider proposed amendments to the MAPA bylaws. We will accomplish these tasks, and afford our members- delegates the opportunity to participate in all National Latino Congreso activities and events. Registration for the MAPA convention will be $25.00. This will be used to cover registration fee to the National Latino Congreso. We want you to attend and participate in both events. The value of attending the Second National Latino Congreso is that you will participate in many activities with members of other Latino organizations who are fighting on different fronts for the improved social situation of our community, political empowerment, a clean and green environment, women and youth rights, fair immigration reform, an end to the war in Iraq and a return of U.S. troops, presidential candidate forums, and others - members of LULAC, MALDEF, Southwest Voters Registration and Education Project, Willie Velasquez Institute, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, and many others. Leaders of the immigrant's rights movement nationally will be in attendance. The number and diversity of workshops are too many to list in this letter. Plenary sessions with hundreds and thousands of other delegates will be the forum for exchanges of opinions and the consideration of relevant resolutions. I highly recommend that you visit the Congreso website to review the accomplishments of the Congreso in 2006, check on the complete list of workshops and speakers for this year, and directly register online - www.latinocongreso.org. It is not often that Latino organizations gather to discuss issues of common concern, approve resolutions, and make plans to take action on such issues. This is an historic occurrence that Latinos begin to define for ourselves our role in society and the kind of society we want for our families and neighbors. A reminder, MAPA membership dues must be received by the state/national office fifteen days prior to the date of the convention in order to be a voting delegate. Please forward your dues to: 310 N. Soto Street, Los Angeles, CA 90033. Please call Guadalupe de la Rosa at (323) 269-1575, Extension 306 if you have any questions regarding the status of your chapter or membership. We look forward to a successful convention and National Latino Congreso. Sincerely, Nativo V. Lopez National President Join us in this prolonged campaign for driver's licenses and visas for our families.
